About Dr. Zweifel

Originally from the red rock country of Southern Utah, I completed my undergraduate and medical school training in Salt Lake City. I came to Oregon to train in general psychiatry at Oregon Health and Science University, and have now called the Pacific Northwest home for several years. After graduating from the OHSU psychiatry residency program and completing a psychiatry chiefship, I opened my private practice in Portland, Oregon.

I understand that mental health and illness have different meanings for each person, and I aim to create an environment in which these meanings can be explored and understood. I value working with a wide variety of patients with different cultural, religious/spiritual, and socioeconomic backgrounds. I treat the full range of psychiatric disorders with particular interest in anxiety disorders, obsessive-compulsive disorders, mood disorders including depression and bipolar spectrum illnesses, personality disorders, psychotic illnesses including schizophrenia, and trauma.

Practice Policies

    • The decisions of which medications to use and when are based on a variety of factors which are unique to each individual patient. Because of this, I generally do not prescribe on the first visit. Once a treating relationship has been established, and we have determined that medications are appropriate, I will work with you to develop your specific treatment plan.

    • On occasion, the use of controlled substances such as stimulants or benzodiazepines can helpful for treating specific disorders. Please note that I only prescribe controlled substances in specific circumstances and to well-established patients.

    • As a solo provider, I am not always immediately available for prescription refill requests. Please allow up to 3 business days for refills requests to be processed.

    • I will generally meet with patients for a minimum of 3 consultation visits prior to establishing a therapeutic relationship. This is so that you, the patient, have a chance to see how I work. This is also my chance to get an idea of who you are, what struggles you might be facing, and for me to consider what type of treatment I feel would be most beneficial for you. At the end of the consultation period, we will have a discussion and decide together what next steps to take in regards to your treatment.

    • I see therapy patients a minimum of once weekly.

    • Please note that, except for rare circumstances with established patients, I only see psychotherapy patients in-person, for face-to-face visits.

  • For self-pay patients I charge a flat fee of $265 per 45-minute session.

Self-pay patients are those that choose not to utilize insurance, and insured patients engaged in high-frequency treatments which their insurance does not fully cover (for example, insurance will often only cover 1-2 therapy sessions per week or less, with any remaining sessions being paid out-of-pocket).

In certain circumstances, I may be able to establish a lower fee based on individual factors. Any reduction in fees is negotiated on an individual basis.

  • I currently accept the following forms of payment:

    • Self-pay (cash pay)

    • Regence Blue Cross

    • Cancellations and missed appointments will be subject to a full charge if not received at least 3 business days in advance. This is necessary because a time commitment is made to you and is held exclusively for you. Please note that insurance providers do not cover late cancellation or missed appointment fees, so you will be responsible for the full appointment fee.

    • Excessive cancellations are defined as any appointment that is cancelled, even if greater than 72 hours notice is provided, when more than 15% of appointments during the preceding six-month period have been cancelled for any reason (for example, if 3 out of 20 appointments are cancelled within a six-month period). You will be responsible for the entire appointment fee for any excessive cancellations. Please note that insurance providers do not cover excessive cancellation fees, so you will be responsible for the entire appointment fee.

    • Any appointment that is successfully rescheduled such that there is no reduction in the number of sessions will not be counted as a cancellation, and therefore will not incur any additional fee.
